About my artwork
Lino Monopoli is a self-taught artist from Milan, where he began his career in 1983, in his late forties, with portrait studies and ink sketches. In this period he made extemporary portraits of passengers on public buses and trams, moving on to experiment in mixed ink and oil techniques and creating his first tin on copper bas-reliefs (Ballerina, Space Ballet, Horse’s Head, Miser Warrior, Pulcinella). Leaving aside his work in copper, he began to produce figures in drops of liquid tin (Weeping Nature ,Athlete, Homage to Salvador Dalì, Self-Portrait).
In 1986 he followed a course organized by the Milan Town Council Recreation Sector, under the guidance of the painter Reggianini. Here he worked on his first casts and carried out his first tin sculptures (Horse’s Head, Female Portrait, Man’s Thoughts). It was during this period that he experimented in wood, producing both abstract and figurative works (Prehistoric Animals Fighting for Survival, Horse’s Head).
By 1989 he was experimenting in clay and welded iron techniques (Horse’s Head, Moving Horse’s Head, Crucifix). The horse’s head is a recurring subject for Monopoli, it stands as a symbol of freedom, nobility and dignity. In 1992 he tried casting some of his sculptures in bronze (Man’s Thoughts, Ballerina, Horse’s Head) to find that they took on a more significant dimension.
In 1996 he held his first personal exhibition – entitled ‘His Churlish Royal Majesty’ - at the Barona and Satta Cooperative in Milan. In the following year he tried his hand at stone sculptures (Neptune, Greek Warrior) and showed his works in various street and cultural centre art exhibitions. From 1998 on, while continuing to sculpt in stone , wood and metal, he returned to oil, water and airbrush painting and held a personal exhibition at the Comuneglia Town Council.
In 1999 he took part in the Art in Ice exhibit with Marco Giglioli and Davide Colino, presenting his work Ambiguity (a central theme in today’s society where man’s true face is always hidden). Also in 2000 with Marco Giglioli and Davide Colino, he participated in the Ladn Art Exhibition in Livigno with his work Around the Fire. He continues to sculpt in wood and clay.
In 2001 he presented several wood sculptures at the Art Exhibition in Milan’s famous Canal District (wood and slate Crucifix, Ballerinas in seasoned wood, Dancer). In 2002 he created Totem, a homage to Peru with Peruvian masks and idols; in 2003 The Odd Couple Sadness and Joy and from 2004 to 2007, alongside his wood sculptures he also returned to the use of clay (Horse’s Head, Female Portrait, Dancer –a play on triangles-, Famous Woman, Dog’s Head, Pair of Swans, Mandolin Player, Model, Ballerina, Nativity, Blue Nativity, Tenderness- Woman and Child, Mother and Child, Pair of Horses –abstract-, Elves in the Wood, Attilio in a Glum Mood, Madonna of Serenity, Mermaid with Man’s Face). At the end of 2007 he went back to brush and spatula painting in acrylics.

The earth trembles

The earth trembles
Ancestral fears grip us when the earth trembles, despair seeps into our hearts
Destruction spreads out, our souls feel the uncertainty of tomorrow
Like a giant stomping over the houses, devastation in his aftermath
People see their life’s work vanish, even solidarity disappears and can offer no comfort to those who are blighted
Despondency numbs the body, shudders of fear envelop you
You can’t shake them off, nothing calms you, your only hope is that the earth will stop trembl… Continue

Mother Earth

Mother Earth
We, the citizens of a land that doesn’t belong to us,
believe that a title deed is enough to own a nothing.
Our laws only attest that we are passers-by in
a territory that is only on loan, our mother earth.
At times she trembles just to remind us show small we are,
we, the citizens of a world we treat with disdain,
with no thought for tomorrow. Perhaps these warnings will awake
our respect for the earth, fertile and arid,
acquiescent against all odds.
The time comes when she calls u… Continue

Casa Azul - THE FRIDA KAHLO MUSEUM

THE FRIDA KAHLO MUSEUM

A Narrative by Gale Randall

For an offbeat travel experience in the Mexico City area, consider a visit to the Museo Frida Kahlo in Coyoacan. Hidden behind high cobalt blue walls at the corner of Londres and Allende in this charming southwestern suburb, the museo is where the surrealist artist Frida Kahlo was born, grew up and later lived with her muralist husband Diego Rivera, from 1941 until her death at age 47 in
